Equestrian Team Advances Three To Zones

4/6/2010 10:20:03 AM

After traveling to Saratoga Springs for the Regional Championships this past weekend, the equestrian team advanced three riders to travel to Zones next weekend. Sophomore Katie Fink advanced in novice fences as a reserve champion, junior Kelsey Craig advanced in intermediate flat as a reserve champion and sophomore Charmaine Tan advanced in the walk trot event for third place.

Only those team members who have qualified throughout the year in their respective divisions advance to the Regionals. So, although the team was disappointed not to have more riders advance, the Big Red did quite well in just having so many team members compete. In open fences the Big Red had eight riders competing out of 32 in the division, in open flat there were nine out of 36, in intermediate fences there were nine out of about 45, in intermediate flat there were nine of 47, in novice fences there were 23 of 70, in novice flat there were 24 out of about 100, in walk trot canter there were 25 out of about 85, and in walk trot there were three out of 35.

Seniors Brooke Cagwin and Nicole Finazzo both rode well, with Cagwin having a fifth place finish and Finazzo taking eighth place in Open Fences. Others doing well were junior Kelsey Craig, who was Reserve in the Intermediate Fences, and senior Zoe Samuel, who rode to a sixth-place finish.

The sophomore trio of Katie Fink, Caroline Rusk and Justine Gentilini all had a good weekend. Fink is the Regional Reserve Champion, while Rusk finished fifth and Gentilini rode well but did not finish in the ribbons.

Cagwin was back to ride in the Open Flat and rode to a seventh place finish, while Craig was back to ride on the flat in Intermediate and is the Regional Reserve Champion.

Juniors Morgan Broccoli and Lizzie Briggs rode in the Walk Trot Canter division and they rode well but were not able to move through. Charmaine Tan rode to a third place finish in Walk Trot.

After the trio of Fin, Craig and Tan travel to the Zone Championships held at Centenary this Saturday, April 10th, the team travels to Dartmouth to defend the Ivy League Championship on April 17th.
