ITHACA, N.Y. – All three Cornell rowing teams had great success today with both the heavyweight and lightweight men's squads excelling at the EARC Sprints, held on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., while the women's team had a great showing at the EAWRC Sprints on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. Collectively, 14-of-16 Big Red boats advanced to the Grand Finals, with nine crews finishing in the medals.

“When you look at all three programs together, this is one of the best weekend's Cornell rowing has had in a long, long time,” said Todd Kennett, the Spirit of '57 Director of Rowing.

For the heavyweights, Cornell picked up a gold medal in the second freshmen 8, a silver in the second varsity 8 and a bronze in the first freshman 8, while the third varsity 8 finished just out of the medals, placing fourth overall. The varsity 8 had a rough draw in its heat, as it was edged out by Harvard and Princeton by .7 seconds to come in third and advance to the Petite Finals, where it finished first. The Crimson and Tigers went on to finish 1-2 in the Grand Finals.

In New Jersey, all six of the women's boats earned spots in the Grand Finals for an extremely productive afternoon. Cornell earned a gold medal in the fourth varsity 8 and bronzes in both the third varsity 8 and the varsity 4B. Both bronze medal races were extremely tight with the Big Red missing out on silver medals by .3 of a second. The varsity 4A placed fourth and the second varsity 8 took fifth, while the varsity 8 came in sixth. The sixth place finish by the varsity 8 is Cornell's best finish since 1996.

The lightweight men had four-of-five boats advance to the Grand Finals and picked up medals from the third varsity 8 (gold), the first freshmen 8 (gold) and the second varsity 8 (bronze). The second freshmen 8 took sixth in the Grand Final, while the first varsity 8 placed third in the Petite Final.

The heavyweight team is back in action on Friday, May 28, as it battles Penn for the Madeira Cup on Cayuga Lake Inlet, while the lightweights are out of action until Sunday, June 6 when it travels to the IRA Championships.

The women, on the other hand, will need to wait and see if their season will continue with a bid to the NCAA tournament when the field is announced on Tuesday, May 18.
