Bone Marrow Drive Flyer
ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell athletic family is co-sponsoring a bone marrow drive for tomorrow, Tuesday, May 18, from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Ho Plaza. See the messsage below.
Each day approximately 3,000 individual who have been diagnosed with a fatal blood disease are searching for a life-saving bone marrow match. Unfortunately, I know a member of this statistic, her name is Jaime Vick. She is my sister and the niece of head women's basketball coach Dayna Smith. She was first diagnosed as a sophomore in high school. She went under intense chemotherapy and beat the disease, and processed to earn a basketball scholarship to St. Vincent. At 20, she relapsed and again was forced to fight for her life. Jaime again underwent chemotherapy and was to receive a bone marrow transplant. The donor was her identical twin sister, Jodie. The transplant was believed to be a success and Jaime was cancer free for almost six years. Last Friday, Jaime visited a doctor after sustaining some peculiar bruising, and blood tests confirmed that the cancer came back. At 25, this will be Jaime's third bout with Leukemia and she WILL beat it again. The doctors have outlined a treatment schedule that includes four weeks of chemotherapy to eradicate the cancer, then they will give her another bone marrow transplant. However, unlike last time, the doctors have decided that the donor should be someone completely unrelated to Jaime, so they have turned to the Be The Match Registry to find a donor.
Thanks,
Josh Vick, Football/Track '12
