ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's lacrosse team will play host to Loyola in the first round of the 2010 NCAA tournament when the two teams meet at Schoellkopf Field on Saturday, May 15, at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. The Big Red is seeded No. 7 in the tournament and would play its next contest at Stony Brook, if it can knock off the Greyhounds in the first round.
“It's an impressive collection of 16 teams,” said head coach Jeff Tambroni. “Loyola is a solid team with an extremely talented face-off guy and a very athletic and sound attack. Obviously, we are thrilled to have one more home game for our seniors here on Schoellkopf Field, but we have learned that having a home game does not guarantee success.”
The winner of the contest will head to Stony Brook, N.Y. for the NCAA quarterfinals on Sunday, May 23 to meet the winner of the Syracuse/Army game.
The game against the Loyola marks the eighth time overall and seventh straight campaign in Tambroni's 10-year career with the Big Red that he will take Cornell to the NCAA tournament. It will also be the 23rd NCAA tournament appearance in school history, with the Big Red posting a 27-19 record with 11 Final Four appearances. Cornell advanced to the national championship game last season, where it fell to Syracuse in overtime.
Cornell closed its 2010 regular season with a 10-5 mark (4-2 Ivy) and earned a share of the Ivy League title along with Princeton, Brown and Yale. The Big Red earned an at-large bid after falling in a 10-9 overtime heartbreaker to the Tigers in the first-ever Ivy League tournament championship game.
The game will be the first meeting between the two programs.
The Greyhounds, which earned an at-large bid, will be making their 17th trip to the NCAA tournament. Loyola owns a 9-4 record and finished second in the ECAC standings with a 6-1 record before falling to Denver, 12-4, in the tournament championship. The Greyhounds are led by former Duke player Collin Finnerty and Matt Langan with 34 and 32 points, respectively. Finnerty has tallied a team-best 22 goals, along with Cooper MacDonnell, while Langan leads the team with 17 assists. Between the pipes, Jake Hagelin has started all 13 games, posting a 7.86 goals-against average and a .560 save percentage.
