ITHACA, N.Y. -- Junior gymnast Maddie Pearsall has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large second team on Thursday afternoon. She is the eighth Cornell gymnast to earn the prestigious academic honor and the first since Meghan Miller was a third-team pick in 2005.

Pearsall was a first-team academic all-district pick for the second straight year after earning USAG All-America honors on uneven bars in 2010. The team's top scorer in the event and a three-year starter, she has the school's third-highest all-around score in school history (38.600). An NCAA regional qualifier in 2008 when she was named the ECAC Rookie of the Year, she has captured six USAG All-America honors in her three year career. She was instrumental in the team's first-ever USAG national title in 2009 when she finished in the top 10 in all five events, including a second-place finish on bars and in the all-around. She has also been a part of three consecutive Ivy Classic team champions.

Away from the gym, Pearsall is a member of the Dean's List, an Academic All-Ivy pick and a member of the school's 400 Club for posting a 4.0 semester grade point average. She has posted a 3.95 grade point average in Information Science, Systems and Technology.

The at-large category includes the best and brightest student-athletes in the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis and water polo.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
