ITHACA, N.Y. -- A pair of Cornell baseball players have gotten off to outstanding seasons in summer baseball play and have been named to the all-star teams in their respective leagues. Rising junior
Brian Billigen was selcted to the Coastal Plain League American Division All-Star team, while rising senior
Taylor Wood has been named to the West Division team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Billigen, playing for Edenton (N.C.) in the Coastal Plains League, was selected as a starter in the outfield for the American Division. He ranks sixth in the league with a .333 batting average, while his .520 slugging percentage is fourth in the league. Billigen has 50 base hits, second-highest total in the league, and leads the league with three triples.
The Coastal Plains League All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday, July 20, at McNair Field in Forest City, N.C.
Wood, meanwhile, was selected to the pitching staff for the West Division in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Pitching for Holyoke (Mass.), Wood has been outstanding, posting a 0.96 earned-run average in 37.1 innings of work, striking out 37, good for third in the league. He has a 2-3 record in five starts with one complete game. He has allowed just four earned runs all season, and likely clinched his spot on the all-star roster with his last performance, a complete-game, 12-strikeout and no-walk performance in a 3-2 victory against North Adams.
The New England Collegiate Baseball League will play its All-Star Game on Sunday, July 18, at Cardines Field in Newport, R.I.
