Fencing Announces Class of 2014

8/5/2010 12:50:02 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell fencing head coach Iryna Dolgikh has announced the Big Red's incoming class of 2014. Cornell will add five fencers to next year's squad, as Haley Conover (Comstock Park, Mich.), Kristi Conway (Wading River, N.Y.), Jennifer Lee (Parsippany, N.J.), Christine McIntosh (Clifton, N.J.) and April Whitney (Washington Depot, Conn.) will join the team for the 2010-11 season. The class of five comes from four different states and consists of three foil, one saber and one epee.

“Our strategy as team recruiters is to bring in fencers in certain weapons a year before they will be needed,” said Dolgikh. “For example, in the 2008-09 recruiting year we heavily recruited epee fencers because we expected to have four major epees graduate in the spring of 2010. Now, as we enter the fall of 2010, we have with several solid sophomore epeeists. This past season, our task was to concentrate on brining in quality foil fencers as freshmen for the fall of 2010, as we expect to graduate several foils this spring.”
