INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—Cornell wrestling's
Justin Kerber has earned an at large bid to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Tournament it was announced Wednesday night. Kerber will be the ninth seed at 165 pounds. With the addition of Kerber, the Big Red has qualified nine wrestlers for the NCAA championships that will be held March 17-19 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia, Pa. The NCAA has also released the brackets for the tournament. Cornell has seven wrestlers seeded in the top 12 of their respective weight classes with junior
Cam Simaz holding the top spot at 197 pounds.
Simaz enters the tournament with a 31-1 overall record and qualified for his third NCAA tournament after winning the title at the EIWA tournament. Simaz will take on Cal Poly's Ryan Smith in the first round. Smith is a redshirt junior who is 22-9 for the season. Smith took fifth at the NCAA tournament and was awarded an at large bid the NCAA tournament.
At 125 pounds,
Frank Perrelli has earned an 11th seed in his first NCAA tournament. The Big Red wrestler won the EIWA title to earn the automatic bid. Perrelli will face North Dakota State's Trent Sprenkle in the first round. Sprenkle is 29-9 heading into the NCAA tournament. The NDSU sophomore received an at large bid to the NCAAs after going 0-2 to ranked wrestlers in the NCAA West Regional tournament.
Senior
Mike Grey is the eighth seed at 133 pounds. Grey is 11-0 this season and earned his fourth bid to the NCAA championships after winning the EIWA tournament. In the first round, Grey will take on Garrett Drucker of Oregon State. Drucker, 22-8, was the runner-up at the Pac 10 tournament.
At 141 pounds, senior
Corey Manson qualified for his first NCAA championships by placing fifth at the EIWA tournament. Manson will wrestle Levi Jones of Boise State in a pigtail match, with the winner facing Lockhaven's Matthew Bonson in the first round. Jones is 13-9 for the season and was the runner-up at the Pac 10 tournament.
Returning NCAA champion
Kyle Dake holds the fourth seed at 149 pounds. Dake qualified for his second national tournament after taking second at the EIWA tournament. Dake will face Central Michigan's Donnie Corby in the first round. Dake faced Corby in November when the teams dualed at the Friedman Wrestling Center. Dake won a 6-2 decision. Corby is a redshirt sophomore and is 23-14 for the season. Corby was the runner up at 149 pounds at the MAC tournament and earned an at large bid for the NCAA tournament.
At 157 pounds, senior
DJ Meagher will wrestle in his second NCAA tournament. Meagher earned an automatic bid after placing fourth at the EIWA tournament. Meagher will face the top seeded Adam Hall of Boise State in the first round. Hall is 25-0 for the season and won the Pac 10 title.
Ninth seeded Kerber will face Clarion's Bekzod Abdurakhmonov in the first round. The Tashkent, Uzbekistan native is 35-10 in his junior year. Abdurakhmonov finished in third at the EWL championships.
NCAA runner up
Mack Lewnes is the third seed at 174 pounds. Lewnes qualified for his fourth NCAA tournament after winning his fourth EIWA title. The Big Red senior will face Boston University's Hunter Meys. Meys is a redshirt freshman and is 24-7 for the season. Meys finished in second at the CAA championships.
At 184 pounds, sophomore
Steve Bosak qualified for his second NCAA tournament after finishing second at the EIWA tournament. Bosak earns a third seed and will wrestle Northern Illinois' (NIU) Brad Dieckhaus. Dieckhaus is a redshirt junior with a 15-8 record. The NIU wrestler qualified for the NCAA tournament after winning the title at the MAC championships.
