BOSTON, Mass. –
Jadd Schmeltzer '11 has been selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 49th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. He becomes the second Cornellian chosen in the draft, following incoming freshman Roberto Suppa, who was taken on Tuesday in the 26th round by the San Diego Padres.
A right-handed pitcher from Tappan, N.Y., Schmeltzer was the team's Pitcher of the Year as a sophomore and as a senior. This past season, he posted a 3-4 record with a 3.63 ERA, including a shutout of Ivy League champion Princeton in his last collegiate start.
In addition to his time on the mound, Schmeltzer saw extensive time in the lineup for the Big Red as a designated hitter and at first base. For his career, he hit .230 with a .438 slugging percentage and a .325 on-base percentage. He also posted a career fielding percentage of .938.
Schmeltzer graduated in May from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
