WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Cornell gymnastics team placed fourth among six teams at the season-opening Lindsey Ferris Invitational at George Washington University on Sunday afternoon.
Melanie Standridge topped all comers on beam with an impressive 9.800 showing to lead the Big Red, who scored a 188.950.
Cornell was just .075 out of third place in the meet won by North Carolina (192.650). The host Colonials finished second (190.325), with Ivy League foe Penn placing third (189.025). Rounding out the field was William & Mary (188.800) and Temple (187.450).
Standridge's outstanding effort on beam bested 35 other competitors, with North Carolina's Elizabeth Durcak and Maura Masatsugu each scoring 9.775 to tie for second. McKenna Archer finished eighth in the loaded field with a strong 9.650. Archer also placed third on vault with a 9.725 and was the team's top finisher on floor at 12th overall with a 9.500.
On bars, Alexis Schupp scored 9.800 for a third-place effort, while Elise Kerner placed ninth with a 9.650.
The Big Red will return to action when it visits Penn State for a quad meet with the Nittany Lions, as well as Michigan State and Alabama on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
