ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman Cole Bardreau scored on a power play 2 minutes, 5 seconds into overtime to give the Cornell men's hockey team to a rousing 4-3 victory over visiting Dartmouth on Friday night in the squad's first home game in nearly seven weeks. Freshman forward Brian Ferlin and sophomore forward Dustin Mowrey both had a goal and an assist for the Big Red.

In front of a sold-out Lynah Rink crowd of 4,267, Bardreau lifted a rebound of a Sean Whitney point shot over Dartmouth goalie Cab Morris to put the Big Red on top for good after it yielded two- and one-goal leads in the second and third periods, respectively. Senior forward Sean Collins also assisted on the winning goal, giving him nine points over the last six games.

The victory keeps ninth-ranked Cornell (11-4-3, 8-1-2 ECAC Hockey) one point ahead of Union for first place in the league, also extending the Big Red's overall unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2) and league unbeaten streak to nine games (7-0-2).

MIH defense
Cornell started the tilt in a feeling-out process, trading jabs with Dartmouth. Though the Big Green had the first several shots on goal, sophomore goalie Andy Iles settled in and turned away a few quality chances to keep the visitors from grabbing an early lead.

A turnover in the fourth minute sent Dartmouth's Matt Lindblad up the right wing on a two-on-one. He got a pass across to Tyler Sikura, but he fumbled the puck for a split second before whipping a shot off the side of the cage.

Cornell countered with Ferlin's goal on the backhand at the 5:48 mark. After a solid shift that had Dartmouth on its heels, freshman defenseman Joakim Ryan gathered a loose puck in the neutral zone and passed ahead to Mowrey. He found Ferlin cutting down the middle, who then cut wide on his defender and slid a shot from a sharp angle under Big Green sophomore goalie Cab Morris.

Ryan then made a stellar defensive play to deny Rick Pinkston of a goal into a wide-open net at the other end three minutes later.

This allowed the Big Red to double its lead in the second period on a power-play goal from Mowrey 4:39 into the second period. Junior defenseman Nick D'Agostino led a charge up-ice, swooping across the neutral zone before an entry on the left side. As he neared the goal line with the defense's full attention, he dished off to Mowrey in the left circle. He then snapped a shot off Morris' glove and into the net for his third strike of the season.

But Dartmouth (7-8-2, 4-5-1) answered with two goals in a 36-second span late in the frame. Mark Goggin was foiled by Iles after a scramble near the right post, but was able to flip his own rebound off the goalie's backside to pull the Big Green to within one. The goal was also the first Iles or the Big Red had surrendered on home ice since Oct. 29 – a program-record span of 350:06.

A quick penalty 10 seconds later but the Big Green on the man advantage, and it capitalized with another scrambly goal – this one coming from Doug Jones just 1:29 before the intermission. Connor Goggin's point shot was knocked down, leaving Jones with a gaping net. Iles made a spectacular save with the paddle of his stick, but the puck bounced right back to Jones for the putback.

This time, it was the Big Red that responded quickly. Freshman forward Madison Dias used a quick poke check to thwart a Dartmouth breakout attempt, then alertly stayed onside as senior forward Locke Jillson raced forward to collect the loose puck. With a Big Green defenseman recovering to close down the angle, Jillson blasted a shot from the right circle over the catching glove of the lefthanded Morris to put the Big Red back on top at the 19:33 mark.

Andy Iles
Dartmouth equalized one more time with a power-play goal from Neiley in the third period – his third point of the game and first multi-point collegiate effort for the freshman. Matt Lindblad set up the one-timer.

The Big Red killed a penalty late in the third period to force overtime, then drew its final chance on the man advantage 1:01 into the extra frame. Ferlin took a few whacks at a loose puck as Dartmouth was trying to advance out of its own zone, forcing the puck off a Big Green defenseman and into the slot where Mowrey skated in a mini-break toward goal. He never got a shot off, but drew a slashing penalty that set up Cornell's winner.

Iles made 25 saves in the victory. With the win, Cornell has won its last five regular-season meetings at Lynah Rink with Dartmouth.

The Big Red returns to Lynah Rink on Saturday for another Ivy League matchup against rival Harvard at 7 p.m. The Crimson tied Friday at No. 18 Colgate, 2-2.
