Cornell Fall Invitational brackets (after Day 1)
ITHACA, N.Y. — Five members of the men's tennis team won their opening matches in the White Singles Flight, and sophomore
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen won his first-round match in the Red Singles Flight as play got under way Friday at the Cornell Fall Invitational.
Nguyen defeated Colgate's Alec Goldstein, 6-2, 6-2, to set up a Saturday quarterfinal match against Binghamton's Ismael Dinia. Junior
Venkat Iyer and sophomore
Sam Fleck received first-round byes and will compete in separate quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.
In the White Singles Flight,
Kyle Berman, Alex Wilton,
Brett Cromwell and
Zhongming Chen won in straight sets. Chen will face teammate
Spencer Clark in the quarterfinals, as Clark held off Binghamton's Janik Burri, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
The Big Red has also pushed three teams into the semifinals of the doubles flight.
Alex Sidney and Clark won a pair of matches to set up a date with Fleck and Nguyen, who received a first-round bye before defeating Binghamton's Florian Van Kann and Ruben Haggai.
Patrick Fiaux and
Andro Zunic will appear in the other semifinal against Binghamton's Alexander Maisin and Eliott Hureau.
Play at the three-day tournament will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday at Reis Tennis Center.
