MADISON, Wis.  – Up against the strongest group of racers it has seen all season, the Big Red men's cross country team took 43rd place at the Wisconsin Invitational on Friday afternoon.

Cornell scored 1,159 points while Stanford, the race winner, scored 135. The Big Red finished just ahead of Ivy League rival Brown, whose combined score of 1,237 points put the Bears in 44th overall.

The Big Red's top finisher of the race was junior Max Groves. His time of 24:36 over eight kilometers was good enough for 175th place in the field of 316 runners. Junior Gabe Heck was close behind him in 25:03 for 238th place, and senior Nick Wade was the Big Red's third runner in 25:04 just inches behind Wade for 240th.

Completing the Big Red's scoring quintet was senior Brett Kelly (247th, 25:10) and sophomore Ben Potts (259th, 25:23). Also racing but not scoring for Cornell were senior Matt McCullough (276th, 25:41) and junior Andrew Herring (292nd, 26:22).

The Big Red also had two competitors in the Open Race as sophomore Tyler Eustance freshman Connor Herr faced off against 103 other runners. Eustance was the Big Red's top finisher in that race, taking 81st in 26:08. Herr was close behind, crossing the finish line in 26:13 for 86th place.

Cornell will have its lone home meet of the year next week, hosting the John Reif Memorial on the Moakley Course on Friday.
