The tennis teams have reached the final stop of its fall tournament season this weekend, when members of the Big Red will compete in the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional championships hosted by Army and Yale.
Sophomore
Kyle Berman has advanced through singles qualifying for the men's tournament, winning a pair of matches Thursday to earn one of the eight final berths into the main draw. Berman, seeded second in the qualifying draw, defeated St. Bonaventure's Oscar Yanez, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, and UConn's Ryan Carr, 6-2, 6-2. Berman will face Yale's Martin Svenning on Friday in the first round of the main draw.
The Big Red has three of the top 16 seeds in the singles main draw — junior
Venkat Iyer (fifth), freshman
Dragos Dima (ninth) and
Sam Fleck (11th). All three have earned first-round byes. Sophomore
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen will face Quinnipiac's Sebastian Barbaro in the first round, and junior
Spencer Clark will put his 10-match winning streak on the line against Penn's Austin Kaplan.
In doubles, the teams of Berman and Clark, and Dima and Iyer will be competing in the first round. The tandem of Fleck and Nguyen is seeeded seventh and will begin play in the second round.
The women's tournament in New Haven, Conn. got started Friday morning with the singles qualifying draw and the first two rounds of the main doubles draw. The doubles field will be whittled to 16 after the first day, with the Big Red tandems of
Sarah O'Neil and
Lauren Frazier,
Christine Ordway and
Dena Tanenbaum, and
Laila Judeh and
Ryann Young competing.
Cornell has two entrants in the singles qualifying draw — freshman
Dena Tanenbaum, who has received the third seed, and sophomore
Courtney Malinchak. There are 32 women in the draw, with two victories needed to make the field of eight qualifiers to be added to the main singles bracket.
