NEW YORK — The tennis teams will continue their tour of fall tournaments this weekend when the Big Red women's squad competes in the USTA BJK NTC College Invitational at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, and the men's team visits Ivy League ground to compete in the Columbia Classic.
This will be the men's team's second tournament of the season after starting off the campaign Sept. 14-16 at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational.
Brett Cromwell had the Big Red's best performance in singles, reaching the semifinals of the Pagoda Bracket, while
Kyle Berman,
Sam Fleck and Alex Wilton all reached the quarterfinals of their respective flights.
In doubles, Berman and classmate
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen advanced to the finals of the B Flight before suffering an 8-5 loss to a team from Georgetown. The Big Red hasn't competing in Columbia's fall tournament since 2008, when it won the Flight C singles title and both flights of doubles. Play in this year's three-day event starts Friday.
For the women's team, freshman
Laila Judeh has kicked off her collegiate career in strong fashion with a 6-1 record, including a victory in the B Singles Flight of the Cornell Fall Invitational and a run to the semifinals of the B Singles Flight at Penn's Cissie Leary Invitational two weeks ago. Sophomore
Lauren Frazier also has six singles victories to date, including four wins on her way to the B Flight championship match at the Cissie Leary.
The Big Red had an impressive debut to its season at the Cornell Fall Invitational, taking three of four bracket titles. Senior
Sarah O'Neil won all three of her matches, including a three-set rally to top teammate
Ryann Young in the final of “A” Flight Singles. The sophomore tandem of
Courtney Malinchak and
Sara Perelman topped the field in “B” Flight Doubles.
In last year's USTA BJK NTC College Invitational, Malinchak advanced the furthest of the Big Red's competitors in singles play with an appearance in the quarterfinals of the G Flight. In doubles, Perelman and fellow sophomore
Rosemary Li advanced to the semifinals of the C Flight. The three-day event starts Saturday.
