NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Men's tennis had two doubles teams and sophomore
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen in singles advance through the first round of play at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional.
Nguyen defeated Quinnipiac's Sebastian Barbaro, 6-2, 6-2, in Friday's first round of the main singles draw to earn a date with 10th-seeded Dragos Ignat of Columbia in Saturday's second round. The Big Red also had three of the top 16 seeds in the bracket — junior
Venkat Iyer (fifth), freshman
Dragos Dima (ninth) and
Sam Fleck (11th) — who earned first-round byes.
After advancing through qualifying on Thursday, sophomore
Kyle Berman was ousted in the first round of the main singles draw on Friday with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Yale's Martin Svenning. Junior
Spencer Clark was also eliminated with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 loss to Penn's Austin Kaplan.
In doubles, Berman and Clark teamed up to defeated Fairleigh Dickinson's Arvis Berzins and Ibrahim Shams. Dima and Iyer were also victorious Friday, taking an 8-5 decision against Penn's Vim De Alwis and Jeremy Court. The tandem of Fleck and Nguyen is seeeded seventh and will begin play in Saturday's second round.
