ITHACA, N.Y. — The much anticipated beginning of the Cornell hockey season will once again be highlighted by the Red/White Game, which will feature both the men's and women's teams at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
The Big Red men's team is ranked sixth in both major national preseason polls after advancing to an NCAA regional final last season, and the women's squad currently holds down the No. 2 spot in the nation after making its third consecutive appearance in the Women's Frozen Four last March.
The format will include regular power-play situations and a shootout at the end of the contest. The men's teams and women's teams will rotate pairs of shifts.
The game coincides with Cornell Employee Celebration and is free to attend. Tickets for door prizes and a 50/50 will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefitting the Cornell Hockey Association and the support of the Big Red hockey programs. Players from both teams will also be available for a meet-and-greet session after the game in the hallway between Lynah Rink and Bartels Hall.
There will also be tables to raise funds for The Emergency Cornellians Aiding and Responding to Employees (CARE) Fund, which is a program offering financial assistance to faculty and staff who have experienced a non-recurring sudden or emergency-related financial hardship due to an unforeseen or unavoidable event. Some of the events that fund recipients have endured include house fires, unforeseen medical or funeral expenses, or the devastating floods that hit the area in September 2011.
The Cornell women's hockey team will also play in a pair of exhibitions at Lynah Rink bookending the Red/White Game — at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 against the CWHL's Brampton HC and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 against the CWHL's Montreal Stars. The Big Red men will also play two exhibitions before the beginning of its regular season, hosting the U.S. National Team Development Program's Under-18 at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 and Canadian university Brock at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20.
