Tasker, Tretter As Unanimous First-Teamers Highlights All-Ivy Football Team

11/20/2012 3:00:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Seniors Luke Tasker and JC Tretter were named unanimously to the All-Ivy first team on Tuesday afternoon in a vote of the league's eight head coaches. They were among five Big Red players selected to the All-Ivy team, joined by second team picks Grant Gellatly (wide receiver) and Jeff Mathews (quarterback), as well as Brett Buehler (linebacker, honorable mention).

Tasker had a record-breaking senior season, hauling in 75 passes for a school single-season record 1,207 yards and eight touchdowns. His yardage mark ranked sixth in Ivy history and he ranked among the national leaders in receptions per game (ninth, 7.5), receiving yards per game (fourth, 120.7) and all-purpose yardage per game (34th, 127.2). Tasker's totals led the Ancient Eight in both receptions and receiving yards per game. Tasker had a reception in each of his final 30 games, ending his career with 2,482 receiving yards to rank second on Cornell's career list and 13th best all-time in Ivy history.

Tasker had a pair of 200-yard games as a senior, including 10 catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Princeton. He was even better against Monmouth, setting a Cornell single-game record with 280 receiving yards on 11 catches with one touchdown. The receiving yardage total was the third-best in a game in Ivy history. His 289 all-purpose yards in that game ranks third in a single game in school history and earned him Ivy League Offensive co-Player of the Week. Tasker had eight catches for 87 yards and a touchdown at No. 23 Harvard, 10 catches for 177 yards and a touchdown against Fordham, 10 catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Yale and 110 yards on six catches against Ivy champ Penn, to go along with a two-point conversion.

Tretter was responsible for protecting Mathews' blind side at left tackle and allowed the Big Red to set new Cornell and Ivy passing records in his two seasons there. A preseason honorable mention FCS All-American by Beyond Sports College Network, he was part of a line that allowed the passing game to pile up 3,748 yards, a mark that ranked third in the FCS in 2012. He started each of his final 20 games at left tackle and is the first offensive lineman to earn first-team honors since Kevin Boothe in 2005.

Mathews makes his second straight appearance on the All-Ivy team after another record-setting season and despite playing through numerous injuries. One of 20 players on the Walter Payton Award Watch List, he was a preseason first-team FCS All-American by Beyond Sports College Network in 2012. The 2011 Bushnell Cup winner as Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year in 2011 (the first-ever sophomore to win the award) was a two-time conference Offensive Player of the Week in 2012 who led the Ivy League in passing attempts (405), completions (251) and yards (3,196). Mathews also finished second in passing touchdowns (18), completion percentage (.620) and pass efficiency (137.5) for players with at least five starts. He ranked second nationally in passing yardage (355.1), third in total offense (338.4), 21st in points responsible for (13.8) and 32nd in pass efficiency (137.5). Mathews became Cornell's career passing leader with his 315-yard, three-touchdown effort against Dartmouth, surpassing Ricky Rahne's record of 7,710 yards. His 8,331 yards after three seasons is second all-time in Ivy League history.

Mathews passed for at least 300 yards in seven of his nine games. He completed 35-of-51 passes for 525 yards and four touchdowns (0 interceptions) in the win over Princeton. Mathews opened the season by completing 38-of-56 passes for 489 yards and three touchdowns (0 interceptions) in a 34-27 loss at Fordham. He also ran for a score. Mathews assed for 340 yards and four touchdowns without a pick in the win over Yale en route to earning Ivy League co-Offensive Player of the Week honors and threw for 445 yards and a touchdown, along with a late two-point conversion to tie the game, in a 35-28 loss to Ivy champ Penn.

Gellatly earns his first All-Ivy nod after finishing second in the Ivy League in receiving yards and fifth in receptions per game in a breakout season. He also stood second in all-purpose yards. He ranked in the top 30 nationally in both categories, sitting 18th in receiving yards per game (94.0) and 28th in receptions per game (6.1). Gellatly ended the year with 61 receptions for 940 yards and five touchdowns this season. The 940 yards ranks fifth in a season at Cornell. Gellatly scored three touchdowns (two receiving, one rushing) in the loss to Dartmouth and had 12 catches for 215 yards in the win over Princeton. He had a career-high 13 catches for 181 yards and a touchdown at Fordham and six catches for 111 yards at No. 23 Harvard. Gellatly closed the season by grabbing six passes for 141 yards and a score against Ivy champ Penn.

Buehler, a defensive team co-captain also earned his first All-Ivy nod after ranking fifth on the team in tackles (62) to go along with 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery despite missing two games due to injury. He surpassed 150 career tackles with seven stops in the win over Princeton and made nine tackles and recovered a fumble 32 yards at Brown. Buehler had a career-high 13 tackles with a sack and a forced fumble in the win over Monmouth. He notched seven stops in the Homecoming win over Yale, nine more in the win at Bucknell and 10 tackles with 1.5 for loss at No. 23 Harvard.

Cornell finished the year 4-6 and 2-5 in Ivy League play. The Big Red will open practice for 2013 in Auugust with All-Ivy returners Buehler, Gellatly and Mathews back for one more season.
