ITHACA, N.Y. – After a terrific 2012 college cross country season, freshman Caroline Kellner has been selected to represent Team USA at the Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country Challenge in Edinburgh, Scotland on Saturday. She will be one of six runners for Team USA in the Junior Women's 4K race. The event will start at 5 a.m. EST, and the women's junior 4K race will go off at 7:30 a.m.

The entire event will be streamed live on BBC One TV.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Caroline,” said women's cross country coach Artie Smith. “She earned her spot on Team USA's junior women's squad due to her consistent and high-level performances throughout the 2012 cross country season, demonstrating time and again that she was one of the top freshman cross country runners in the NCAA.”

Kellner was selected by the USA Track & Field Cross Country Council based on her performances throughout her outstanding freshman season at Cornell. To be considered for nomination to the junior squad, athletes must be between 16-20 years old and be a USA Track & Field member in good standing.

Voted Most Valuable Freshman and awarded the “Fifth Runner” award at the team banquet, Kellner was Cornell's fifth runner when the Big Red won the Heps in late October, finishing 15th in her first appearance at the Ivy Championships. She also was the team's fifth runner at the NCAA Regionals in helping the Big Red qualify for the national championships and then was the key fifth and final runner (171st overall) when the Big Red placed 13th as a team at the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 17, Cornell's best finish at the NCAAs since 1993.

Kellner is the first Cornellian to make a U.S. Junior national cross country team since Laura Woeller '95 and Pam Hunt '94 represented the United States at the IAAF Junior World Cross Country Championships in 1992.

“The experience of traveling with Team USA to Scotland and competing against international level competition should be a fun way for her to begin 2013 and the track season that is just around the corner,” Smith said. “She's done a great job representing the Big Red in her first semester at Cornell, and I know she'll give another great effort in representing Cornell and Team USA in Scotland.”

The Bupa Great Edinburgh Challenge is an international team challenge that includes senior and junior teams from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the USA and Europe competing in four separate races with the aim of taking the overall team challenge title. The winning team is determined by the best aggregate finishing positions over the four races.
