ITHACA, N.Y. -- A small group of Cornell middle distance runners competed at Boston University's Valentine Invitational on Friday evening and came away with truly outstanding results.
Junior
Alyssa O'Connor set an Ivy League and school record in the 1000, winning the event in a four-second personal best of 2:45.61. The previous two Ivy League record-holders in the event were All-Americans from Cornell: Kim Standridge '11 and Morgan Uceny '07. Remarkably, on the all-time Ivy list in the 1000, Cornell now has seven of the top 10, all since 2005.
In the mile, senior
Janel Parker and sophomore
Emily Shearer ran excellent races as well. Parker placed third in her heat and 11th overall in a seasonal best of 4:48.54 (only .24 off her all-time best), and Shearer boasted a three-second personal best with a fine time of 4:52.86 for eighth in the same heat.
And in the 800, another pair of personal bests also meant some rearranging of the all-time Cornell top-10 lists. Sophomore
Lauren Lloyd placed fourth in the first heat in 2:07.18, which is a three-second indoor personal best and nearly two-second personal record overall. Lloyd's time is third all-time at Cornell (behind only Uceny and Doriane Lambelet '82 and just ahead of Standridge) and puts her No. 8 all-time in the Ivy League. Senior co-captain
Molly Glantz was very close behind, placing fifth in a personal best 2:07.30, which is now No. 5 all-time at Cornell and No. 10 all-time in Ivy League history.
A small group of middle distance and distance men will compete on Saturday at BU while the rest of the team will play host to the 27-team Kane Invitational in Barton Hall.
