GENEVA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's lacrosse season opener at Hobart scheduled for today at 1 p.m. in Geneva has been postponed due to high winds, snow and the field's playability.
Geneva was hit with an early morning snowstorm and the field crew was unable to keep up with the early accumulations. With temperatures below freezing, there was concern over the field's playability. The two teams couldn't come to a resolution on a makeup site.
"We're disappointed that we weren't able to kick off our season today, but the weather conditions in Geneva made it impossible for Hobart to make their facility playable," said Cornell head lacrosse coach Ben DeLuca. "In the end, the highest priority must be the safety of both team's student-athletes."
The Big Red team arrived in Geneva on Saturday morning ready to open a promising 2012 season before officials for both schools agreed the conditions were not safe on Boswell Field. Cornell then returned to Ithaca, and after a site and time for Sunday's game could not be agreed upon, the Big Red began preparations for the new season opener against Binghamton on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
Officials from both schools will continue to try and find a future date to reschedule the contest, if possible.
