Men's Hockey All-Ivy

Ferlin Named Ivy League Men's Hockey Rookie of the Year

Iles Tabbed First-Team Goalie

3/1/2012 3:05:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. — Freshman forward Brian Ferlin was named the Ivy League Men's Hockey Rookie of Year, and sophomore goalie Andy Iles was named to the All-Ivy first team on Thursday when the league released its postseason awards. Ferlin was also named to the All-Ivy second team, along with junior linemate Greg Miller and junior defenseman Nick D'Agostino.

Ferlin is Cornell's first Ivy rookie of the year since Riley Nash won the honor in 2008. He is the seventh Big Red player to earn the award since it was first bestowed in 1980, with Joe Nieuwendyk (1985), Corrie D'Alessio (1998), Vinnie Auger (1994), Kyle Knopp (1996) and Denis Ladouceur (1999) taking home the others. Ferlin was third in Ivy League scoring with five goals and eight assists for 13 points in 10 games. Those totals also led Ivy League rookies across the board. Additionally, Ferlin is tied for second on the team in overall assists (13) and points (21), while also ranking second with a plus-15 rating.

Iles gives the Big Red the league's first-team goalie for the sixth time in the last 12 years, joining Ben Scrivens (2010), David McKee (2005), David LeNeveu (2003) and Matt Underhill (2001 & 2002). Iles, who was given honorable mention last season, led the Ivy League with a 2.26 goals-against average and is one of just two goalies in the country to serve as the squad's exclusive backstop throughout the season. If the trend continues, he would be the first goalie at Cornell to accomplish that feat since Darren Eliot in 1982-83, and the first Cornell sophomore to do so since Laing Kennedy in 1960-61 — when the season was just 19 games long.

Miller averaged a point per game through Ivy League play with four goals and six assists in 10 games. He is also one of the Big Red's top faceoff men, winning 55 percent of his draws in ECAC Hockey play. He leads the team in goals (14), points (26) and rating (plus-19) in overall games, having also led the team in scoring as a sophomore. D'Agostino is a second-teamer for a second consecutive season, proving to be a potent offensive threat from the blue line. He leads the Big Red in power-play goals (six) and game-winning goals (five). His 19 points lead all Cornell defensemen.

Cornell won the league outright with a 7-1-2 record against the five other Ivy League schools that have men's hockey programs — Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton and Brown. It's the Big Red's first league title since 2005 and 19th in program history.

The Big Red is idle this weekend, having earned a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey Championship playoffs. Second-seeed Cornell will host a best-of-three quarterfinal series March 9-11 at Lynah Rink against a team to be determined.
