ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red women's hockey contingent playing for Team Canada at the 2012 IIHF World Championships had a wonderful Tuesday afternoon, combining for eight points in Canada's 14-1 victory against Russia.
Cornell efforts for Canada were led by senior
Rebecca Johnston, who tallied an impressive five points on one goal and four assists. Johnston assisted on two Canada goals in the first period and two more in the second before scoring one of her own 3:35 into the final frame.
Junior defenseman
Laura Fortino was the first Cornell player to score, earning an assist at the 13:23 mark of the first period to increase Canada's already mounting lead to 4-0.
Her mate on the blue line, junior
Lauriane Rougeau, scored two points in the game during a three-minute span of the second period. With Canada on the power play, Rougeau got assists from Natalie Spooner and Johnston to notch a man-up goal at the 11:10 mark. Three minutes and 18 seconds later, Rougeau earned the primary assist on Meghan Agosta's second goal of the night.
Though she has not scored yet, Cornell sophomore forward
Brianne Jenner has played in all three games for her home country, earning a +1 rating and taking two shots on goal.
With the victory, Canada earned a bye past the tournament quarterfinals and will not have to play again until Friday's first semifinal game at 3 p.m. Canada will get the winner of Wednesday's Russia-Switzerland matchup, while the United States is playing in the other semifinal against either Finland or Sweden.
