Laura Fortino had a goal and an assist while sophomore forward
Brianne Jenner got her first point of the tournament as Canada defeated Finland 5-1 in the semifinals of the 2012 IIHF Women's World Championships on Friday afternoon.
With the win, Canada – which boasts four Cornell skaters on the roster – advances to the tournament championship on Saturday against the United States.
Friday's win against Finland got off to a fast start when Canada scored two goals in the first five minutes. The team's second goal was potted by Fortino at the 4:53 mark.
Early in the second period, Jenner got an assist on a goal by Meghan Agosta, contributing her first point of the tournament. Midway through the third period, Fortino earned the second assist on a goal by Boston University's Marie Philip-Poulin to make it 4-1 in favor of Canada.
Cornell's
Rebecca Johnston and
Lauriane Rougeau also took part in the game, though neither got on the scoresheet.
Saturday's world championship game will take place at 7 p.m. The United States bested Canada by a 9-2 margin in the tournament's opening round.
