ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell freshman men's lacrosse player
Matt Donovan has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, as was announced this afternoon by the conference office. He was a unanimous selection for the award in a vote by the conference's coaches and was also named second-team All-Ivy. Senior
Roy Lang and junior
Jason Noble were named first-team All-Ivy, while senior
Chris Langton joined Donovan on the second-team. Juniors
Steve Mock and
Thomas Keith earned honorable mention selections.
Donovan, the fifth Ivy League Rookie of the Year in Cornell history, ranks first among conference rookies in points per game (2.67) and leads the Big Red with 32 points. He also has the most assists of any freshman in the conference and leads Cornell with 1.17 per game. He has registered at least one point in all but one game during his career and has had a multi-point game on eight occasions. Donovan registered a career-best four goals against Army and at Princeton, while handing out a personal best three assists vs. Denver. He was also named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week five times during the season, the most by any player in the 25-year history of the award.
Lang repeats as a first-team All-Ivy selection following a 2012 season that saw the senior take on a larger role in the Big Red defensive and face-off units as a do-it-all midfielder. He has registered 15 goals and handed out four assists for 19 points. Lang has also collected 22 ground balls and caused six turnovers. Earlier this season, he scored the game-winner as Cornell defeated Yale, 8-7, on March 17 at Schoellkopf Field.
Noble earns the second All-Ivy selection of his career after an honorable mention nod a season ago. The junior anchors the 13th ranked defensive unit in the nation and ranks ninth overall with 2.09 caused turnovers per game. Noble also ranks third on the team with 33 ground balls.
Langton, Mock and Keith are all first-time All-Ivy honorees.
Langton runs on the Big Red's first offensive midfield and has posted a career-high 16 goals this season. One of the fastest and most athletic players in the Ivy League, the senior has also handed out two assists and picked up 17 ground balls. Of his 16 goals, two have been man-up tallies and two have been game-winners, including the overtime goal in Cornell's 9-8 victory over Denver.
One of the most dangerous scorers in the conference, Mock leads the Big Red with 21 goals on the season and has tallied six assists for 27 points. Of his 21 goals, five have come on extra-man opportunities and three have been considered game-winners. A scrappy player with a nose for the ball, Mock also has 25 ground balls, second most among Cornell's offensive players.
A tenacious defender with a knack for picking off passes, Keith has caused 12 turnovers on the season and ranks 27th in the country with 4.67 ground balls per game. He is also an integral part of the Big Red's transition offense, as he has registered four goals on just six shots.
The No. 13 Big Red is currently 9-3 on the season with a mark of 4-2 in the Ivy League. Cornell is the number two seed in the upcoming Ivy League tournament, where it will face No. 15 Yale at Princeton's Class of 1952 Stadium on Friday, May 4 at 5 p.m.
