ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Venkat Iyer and freshman Sam Fleck were named to the All-Ivy League Second Team for men's tennis on Thursday, giving Cornell multiple singles selections for the third consecutive season.
 
With five freshmen and one sophomore frequently comprising the lineup, the youthful Big Red posted three straight Ivy League victories to close out a 10-15 season in the competitive league. Iyer and Sidney competed in all but two of Cornell's matches in the first and second position in singles.
 
Iyer primarily held down the top spot in the singles lineup, posting a 10-11 record in dual matches and a 2-5 mark in Ivy League play. His league victories came consecutively against Dartmouth's Michael Laser on April 8 and Brown's Soufin Azargui on April 14. Both competitors are all on the All-Ivy Second Team.
 
Fleck was 11-11 on the season with a 10-8 record from his most-familiar No. 2 singles slot, including an impressive 5-2 record in Ivy Leauge play. Those five victories came in a string to close out the season, including a marathon 7-5, 6-7(6), (10-4) victory over Penn's Nikola Kocovic on April 20. Fleck also led the Big Red in doubles victories with 12. He's the first Cornell freshman to earn an All-Ivy First- or Second Team spot since the league branched off from the EITA in 1999. The Ivy League had only first-team selections until 2004, and Jeremy Feldman was the Rookie of the Year and Honorable Mention in 2008 — though the latter category has since been eliminated.
