ITHACA, N.Y. — Women's Squash Head Coach
Julee Devoy announced today that four newcomers will join the team for the 2012-13 season to build on the team's exciting sixth-place finish at the College Squash Association's Howe Cup.
Brynn Daniels,
Abbey Foster,
Reut Odinak and
Olivia Wherry will join the Big Red, which returns eight of its 10 letterwinners from a season ago.
Daniels won a gold medal with Team British Columbia in the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She finished sixth at the 2011 Canadian Junior Open and also took fourth that year in the Alberta Jesters tournament — where she was also presented the sportsmanship award. As of early July, she was ninth in the Canadian Squash Under-19 rankings.
Foster is a well decorated junior competitor, finishing third in the 2012 Canadian Junior Squash Championships in the 19-and-under division. She is ranked third in the country in that division and first in British Columbia. The Vancouver native won a gold medal while serving as the captain of Team British Columbia in the 2011 Canada Winter Games. Foster also competed with Team Canada at the 2011 World Junior Women's Championships in both team and individual events. She has also won a pair of British Columbia Provincial Championships in both the U19 and U17 divisions in 2010 and 2012, also capturing the U15 title in 2009.
Odinak won a gold medal representing the United States in the 2009 junior team event at the 18th Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv, Israel. She also won a bronze medal in the individual draw. She has competed in other international events, finishing 13th in the German Open and 16th in the Dutch Open in Under-17 events. As of early July, she was ranked 31st in the U.S. Squash Under-19 division. She competed for four seasons at the Overlake School near her hometown of Seattle, Wash.
Wherry served as the captain of the first-year squash program at Saint Ann's School during her senior season, helping the team capture sixth in the high school national championships. Playing her club squash with Heights Casino in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the 2009 Dana Hall Junior Girls Open Champion, took 15th place at the 2010 Pioneer Junior Open and 10th place at the 2011 Dutch Junior Open. Her highest national ranking was 11th during the 2010-11 season girls' Under-17. She won the All-Casino Award in 2012 for Enthusiasm & Leadership in Squash, and was a three-time Scholar Athlete Award winner. As of early July, she was ranked 29th in the U.S. Squash Under-19 division.
The Big Red will announce its 2012-13 schedule later this summer.
