ECAC Hockey Announces Championship Will Return to Lake Placid

8/14/2012 1:37:00 PM

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — ECAC Hockey announced Tuesday that the league's men's championship weekend will return to 1980 Rink - Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid beginning with the 2013-14 season.

The 1980 Rink - Herb Brooks Arena will be the fifth different venue and sixth time the men's championship has experienced a location change in the league's history. The championship has previously been conducted at Boston Arena (1962-66), Boston Garden (1967-92), Olympic Arena in Lake Placid, NY (1993-02), Pepsi Arena/Times Union Center (2003-10), and Boardwalk Hall (2011-2013).

Cornell has reached the league's championship weekend in each of the last five seasons, ECAC Hockey's longest active streak. The Big Red has also advanced to the finals in each of the last three seasons, capturing the program's 12th ECAC Hockey title in 2010. That was the last time the event was held at Times Union Center in Albany before a sojourn to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. The 2012-13 championship will also be held in Atlantic City before the move to Lake Placid.

The Big Red holds an 11-9 all-time record at Herb Brooks Olympic Arena, which has the distinction of being the venue when an upstart United States team dramatically won the gold medal at the 1980 Olympic Games. Cornell captured ECAC Hockey titles in Lake Placid in 1996 and 1997 — Mike Schafer's first two seasons as the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Hockey.
