ITHACA, N.Y. – Against some of the best teams in the nation, the Cornell men's cross country team held its own at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday morning, placing sixth in a 37-team field.
Cornell's 10 athletes, racing in a group of 332 runners in the Gold Race, had its top five runners all place in the top 75 and its seventh-place runner take 115th overall. Cornell accumulated 202 points, finishing just eight points behind fifth-place Providence and 53 points ahead of seventh-place Yale.
The Big Red was led by senior
Nick Wade, who ran the eight-kilometer course in a time of 24:28. Wade was followed closely by junior
Max Groves, who took 20th place and was just five seconds slower than Wade.
Taking third for Cornell and scoring a 27th-place finish overall was senior
Brett Kelly in a time of 24:38. Junior
Andrew Herring was 66th overall with a 25:08 finish and senior co-captain Matt McCullough placed 75th in 25:17.
Cornell's sixth and seventh place finishers were freshman
Connor Herr (107th, 25:36) and sophomore
Tyler Eustance (115th, 25:41).
Cornell faced top-quality opposition on Friday morning, including No. 15 Georgetown, which took third place overall, and No. 22 Villanova, which placed first as a team. Though those teams finished ahead of the Big Red, Cornell did place well over No. 17 Princeton, which was last in 37th place, and No. 28 Columbia, which took eighth overall.
Sophomore
David Melly was the top finisher for the Big Red in the Open race, taking 22nd place in a time of 25:53 on the eight-kilometer course. He was also the ninth finisher among athletes running for a university.
Behind him for Cornell was freshman Sam Baxter, just nine seconds behind Melly. His time of 26:02 was good for 26th place. The Big Red also got contributions from freshman
Brian Eimstad with a 26:05 time for 30th place overall.
Cornell had five other runners in the Open race, including sophomore
Jonathan Phillips (42nd, 26:18), freshman
George Oliver (53rd, 26:27), junior
Adam Custer (142nd, 27:26), sophomore Phelan McCormick (160th, 27:34) and junior
Michael Conroy (205th, 28:02). The race featured 394 athletes.
