WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Big Red got a huge season-opening victory against Army and Binghamton on Friday night, scoring a low of 18 points to Army's 53 and Binghamton's 64.

The Big Red was led by sophomore Ben Potts, whose time of 24:09.80 over the course's eight kilometers was good enough to get him the overall victory by more than seven seconds over teammate Adam Trofa. Potts took control of the race midway and won convincingly while Trofa performed very well after returning from an injury year.

The third scorer for Cornell was senior co-captain Brett Kelly, who notched a time of 24:30.90 and took fourth overall. Just behind him were Nick Wade and Max Groves to round out the Big Red scorers. Cornell placed 12 runners in the top 20.

Junior Andrew Herring (24:56.8) and sophomore Tyler Eustance (24:57.9) ran solidly in 10th and 11th place, respectively, and were
closely followed by junior John Schilkowsky (14th, 25:02.2) and freshman Brian Eimstad (15th, 25:03.0). Rounding out the top 20 were freshman Connor Herr (18th, 25:16.7), sophomore Jonathan Phillips (19th, 25:18.5), and junior Chris Christoff (20th, 25:28.6).  Freshman George Oliver snagged 25th place in 25:43.5.

The Big Red men and women will compete again next week, racing at the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational on Saturday. The men will race an 8K at 11:00 a.m. at Gennesee Valley Park, and the women will race 6K at noon.
