White Prevails in Hockey's Annual Red/White Game

10/12/2013 9:20:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Jillian Saulnier scored twice on penalty shots and once at even strength to help the White team to a 5-2 victory in the hockey teams' annual Red/White Game on Saturday night at Lynah Rink.

The intrasquad game featured two 30-minute halves. With both the men's and women's teams alternating pairs of shifts, it enabled teams to stay fresher than in the past. Power plays were awarded evenly at set times throughout the game. Any infractions that were detected by the officials resulted in penalty shots, which produced the majority of the offense on the evening.

Freshman defenseman Clint Lewis got the scoring started on the first penalty shot on the evening, drawing a hook while killing off a Red power play. He made three moves, before roofing a shot on the backhand over the outstretched glove of senior goalie Andy Iles, giving Red an early 1-0 lead.

White countered with its own penalty shot goal from a freshman when Caroline DeBruin broke in on Stefannie Moak and put a forehand shot between the goaltender's legs. Saulnier then gave White a 2-1 lead heading into halftime with her first penalty shot goal, beating Moak with a shot under the blocker.

Saulnier scored against 2:11 into the second half on a pretty play where she put the puck into her own skates, kicked it her stick in the right circle and wristed a shot inside the far post. She would later score another penalty-shot goal to make the score 4-1 heading into the shootout, which featured three players for each team from each gender. The women's goalies came up big on all six attempts, including three saves from Moak on Monika Leck, Saulnier and DeBruin.

Senior forward Rodger Craig started the men's portion of the shootout with a backhand goal to cut Red's deficit to 4-2. But after a pair of misses, senior Armand de Swardt closed the scoring with a backhand shot over freshman goalie Mitch Gillam.

The Big Red men's team continues its season preparation with an exhibition against York at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. The women's team starts its season next weekend with a pair of non-league games against Northeastern at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20.
