Final Results
Day 2 Highlights
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The crowd fell silent as it waited for the results to show on the scoreboard. Cornell senior
Nick Wade lay face down on the track, his hands covering his ears.
When the scores were posted, Wade and the Big Red jumped up and started celebrating.
In a dramatic Indoor Heptagonal Championship at Harvard, the Cornell men's team came away with its first Heps title since 2010, knocking off Princeton by just one point. The two-day meet came down to the final event and a photo finish in that event as Princeton defeated the Big Red in the 4x400 relay by just .005 seconds. Still, Cornell had a three-point lead entering the relay, and the Tigers were only able to cut into that lead by two.
Entering the final three relays ahead by nine points, Cornell failed to score in the distance medley relay while Princeton won. That put the Tigers up one point. But in the 4x800, Cornell claimed first place and Princeton was third to give Cornell its three-point cushion entering the 4x400.
Cornell ended the Indoor Heps with 157 points while Princeton tallied 156. Harvard was a distant third with 86.
Senior
Nick Wade, who took second in the mile and the 1,000-meter run while also running the third leg of the Big Red's winning 4x800 team, was named the Co-Track Most Outstanding Performer.
Cornell entered the day in second place by one point, trailing Harvard 32-31, but the team picked up points quickly as the Big Red and Princeton emerged as the co-leaders throughout the afternoon.
Cornell had victories in four of five track events at one point, claiming titles in the 60 hurdles (
Max Hairston), the 400 (
Bruno Hortelano-Roig), the 60 dash (
Jedidiah Adarquah-Yiadom) and the 800 (
Will Weinlandt).
The Big Red also had event wins from
Montez Blair in the high jump and got 16 points from
Stephen Mozia's two second-place finishes in the throwing events.
Also bolstering the Red were individual second-place performances at 500 meters (Rutger Admirand, 1:03.20), 1000 meters (
Nick Wade, 2:26.34), the mile (Wade, 4:20.81), pole vault (
David Kim, 15 '5”) and long jump (
Steven Bell, 24' 3”). IC4A-qualifying performances were achieved by 21 of the men and all three relay teams.
Other notable performances in scoring column included
Chris Bain (third, 60 meters, 6.88),
Kinsley Ojukwu (sixth, 400, 49.45), Cisco Olloqui (fifth, 500, 1:04.55),
Andre Anderson (sixth, 500, 1:04.98),
Hong Cho (sixth, 800, 1:53.86),
Kevin Johnson (sixth, 5K, 14:26.63), Zack Zeller (fourth, 60m hurdles, 8.18), Tommy Butler (third, high jump, 6' 11.5”), Hecules Stancil (fourth, long jump, 23' 7.25”),
Dan Scott (fourth, triple jump, 48'1.75”) and
Bryan Rhodes (fourth, weight throw, 59'4”).
The one-point team victory was the closest at the Indoor Heps since 1986 when the Tigers knocked off the Big Red by just three quarters of a point.
Cornell is back in action this weekend when it heads to Boston looking to defend its IC4A Indoor Championship from last season.
