MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomores Quoc-Daniel Nguyen, Jason Luu and Kyle Berman all won singles and doubles matches Friday to lead the men's tennis team to a 4-0 sweep of William & Mary in the first round of the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic. The second-seeded and 29th-ranked Big Red will play Texas Tech in a Saturday semifinal.
 
Cornell (10-2) started off the day by wrapping up the doubles point for the ninth consecutive match. The No. 1 clash did not finish, because the Big Red already locked up the opening point by way of a Luu/Nguyen 8-3 win over Ben Guthrie and John Banks at No. 2 and a No. 3 victory from Berman and sophomore Sam Fleck over Adrian Vodislav and Ben Hoogland, 8-2.
 
The Big Red then went on to win the first three singles matches to finish, all coming from the bottom half of the lineup. Luu got things started with an easy 6-0, 6-2 victory over Vodislav at No. 5, then Berman put William & Mary (6-11) on the brink with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6. Nguyen then clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-6 triumph over Guthrie at the No. 4 position.
 
The Big Red will face No. 47 Texas Tech in a semifinal at 1:30 p.m. CDT Saturday after the Aggies toppled third-seeded and 34th-ranked Columbia, 4-3, in a first-round match earlier Friday.
