ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell junior
Rachel Sorna continued her breakout season on Friday night, setting a new Ivy League record in the 3K steeplechase with a mark of 9:50.39.
Competing at the Spring Break Invitational in Irvine, Calif., Sorna bested the previous Ivy League record by two seconds. She also broke the Cornell record in beating the event's second-place finisher by nearly 57 full seconds, and she topped teammate
Genna Hartung's meet record from the year before by 37 seconds.
Entering the weekend, no collegiate athlete had run under 10 minutes in the steeplechase this season, and the best steeplechase time in the country was 10:32.95.
Also having a great day in the distance events were Cornell's 5K participants. Senior
Katie Kellner claimed the title in the race with
Kate Rosettie and
Devin McMahon taking third and fourth, respectively.
Cornell continues competition in Irvine on Saturday.
