ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red track and field teams will be represented by three athletes at the NCAA Indoor National Championships, the NCAA announced this evening.
On the women's side,
Rachel Sorna will race in the 5K. She will be joined by
Montez Blair in the high jump and
Stephen Mozia in the shot put for the men.
The NCAA Championships will be held at the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, Ark. Mozia will be the first competitor for Cornell, throwing the shot at 4:55 p.m. EST on Friday. He will be followed by Sorna, whose 5K race will goes off at 8:55 p.m. EST that night. Blair closes out the schedule for Big Red athletes, competing in the high jump at 4:30 p.m. EST on Saturday.
Sorna has the nation's ninth-best time this year in the 5K. She completed the race in 15:53.76 earlier this year at the Terrier Classic, breaking her own school record. She is seeded 11th in the 16-athlete race.
For the men, Blair already holds the school record in the high jump and reached 7' 5 1/4” at the Upstate Challenge in Barton Hall in January. That height is the fourth-best in the nation this season. He tied for ninth in the nation at last year's Indoor Championships, clearing 7' 1/2".
Mozia, meanwhile, threw the shot 65' 3 1/4” at the Upstate Challenge in January, breaking his own school record. That hurl is the fifth-best in the country this year. At last year's Indoor Championship, Mozia took 16th place when he threw the shot 56' 11 1/4".
ESPN3 will stream the meet live on March 8 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. ET and March 9 from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. ET. A tape delay of the championship will air Sunday, March 17 from 7 p.m.-9:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
The rest of the Big Red roster will rest up for next weekend's opening to the outdoor season. Cornell travels to California to compete in the Aztec Invitational in San Diego on March 16.
