ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore
Sam Fleck was named to both the singles and doubles All-Ivy League men's tennis teams on Thursday afternoon. Fleck was named to the First Team for singles and the Second Team for doubles. He is just the third member of the program to win three All-Ivy First or Second Team honors since the league started announcing postseason teams in 1999.
Fleck continued to be one of the Big Red's most reliable players in both singles and doubles, appearing in all 22 matches while accruing marks of 14-5 in singles and 15-2 in doubles — the latter being a team high. He most commonly appeared at the No. 2 position in singles, where he was 12-4 overall and 5-2 in Ivy League play. He won one of his two matches against ranked opponents, topping George Washington's 96th-ranked Nikita Fomin, 6-4, 6-3, on Jan. 26. He then ended his season on a four-match winning streak — all in straight sets — against Yale's Marc Powers, Brown's William Spector, Princeton's Matt Spindler and Penn's Jeremy Court. He was an All-Ivy League Second Team selection in 2012.
Fleck was a perfect 5-0 in Ivy doubles matches, all from the No. 3 position when partnered with classmate
Kyle Berman. Overall, the tandem was 14-1 in dual matches. Fleck was also 6-4 in singles and 10-2 in doubles during fall tournaments. The pairing of Fleck and classmate
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen started the season 10-0, with titles in the 'A' brackets of both the Columbia Classic and Cornell Fall Invitational, and a surge into the semifinals of the prestigious USTA/ITA Northeast Regional.
Andy Gauthier '11 and Jonathan Jaklitsch '11 are the other two member of the Big Red to win at least three All-Ivy League honors — not including Honorable Mention team named in only 2008 and 2009. Jaklitsch is the only four-time winner. Before All-Ivy League teams were compiled, All-Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association selections were made back to 1972. Cornell had one four-time All-EITA winner — Dave Merritt '85.
