ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell senior quarterback Jeff Mathews has been named a candidate for the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team it was announced by the American Football Coaches Association. The award honors college football players at all levels of the sport for their selfless acts of giving back to the community and off-the-field achievements.

Mathews is among 84 candidates at the Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA. There are an additional 66 candidates from Football Bowl Subdivision schools for a record total of 150 nominees. A special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members will select the 2013 Good Works Team. Comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA, the final roster of 22 award recipients will be unveiled in September.

One of the most exciting and productive quarterbacks in the history of the Ivy League, Mathews enters his final season on East Hill on the cusp of history. Already Cornell's career passing leader, he is a two-time Bushnell Cup finalist for Ivy League Player of the Year, and became the first sophomore to ever win the award in 2011. Despite playing through numerous injuries that limited him in 2012, Mathews was one of 20 players on the Walter Payton Award Watch List and a preseason first-team FCS All-American by Beyond Sports College Network. He was a two-time conference Offensive Player of the Week in 2012 and led the Ivy League in passing attempts (405), completions (251) and yards (3,196). He also finished second in passing touchdowns (18), completion percentage (.620) and pass efficiency (137.5) for players with at least five starts despite missing a game. Mathews finished on the All-Ivy second team and was runner-up for the Bushnell Cup. He ranked second nationally in passing yardage (355.1), third in total offense (338.4), 21st in points responsible for (13.8) and 32nd in pass efficiency (137.5). He is again on the Walter Payton Award Watch List to begin the 2013 campaign.

Mathews is as impressive off the field as he is on it.

A member of the Big Red Readers and the Red Key Athletic Honor Society, Mathews has also had involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. He was part of a small group of Cornell athletes involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes who visited Wilmington, Del. to help out disadvantaged youth with a group called Urban Promise in the Spring of 2012. He is also the first three-time team captain in Cornell football history.

Yale's Beau Palin was the only other Ivy League student-athlete among the 150 candidates.
