WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Cornell gymnastics team finished second of four teams, including posting the day's top score on beam, at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational on Sunday afternoon at George Washington University. The Big Red scored a 188.750 as a team to finish ahead of both Penn and Temple, but behind the host Colonials.
The Big Red scored a 47.150 on beam as the highest mark on the event for the day, with
Maia Vernacchia leading the way with a third-place effort with her 9.600.
Hannah Clark was fifth on the event (9.550), while
Melanie Jorgensen (eighth, 9.450) and
Jessica Starcevich (ninth, 9.400) also finished in the top 10.
Cornell had the top vaulter not in a George Washington uniform, as
Madeline Martinez was sixth with her 9.675. Not far behind were sisters Sara (ninth, 9.625) and Lexi (10th, 9.600) Schupp.
Three Cornell gymnasts finished in the top 10 on bars, with
Elana Molotsky leading the way in seventh with a 9.550. That was .025 ahead of
Mackenzie Sato (ninth, 9.525), with Lexi Schupp (10th, 9.350) rounding out the top 10.
Lexi Schupp, the Big Red's lone all-arounder, was also the team's top finisher on floor with a 9.775, good for a fourth place tie. Sato was eighth with a 9.750 as the lone other top 10 finisher for Cornell. Schupp was fifth among the all-arounders with a 37.550, a mark that is tied for 10th all-time at Cornell.
The Big Red returns to action when it heads to Penn State for a quad meet with the Nittany Lions as well as Illinois-Chicago and Southeast Missouri State on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. in University Park, Pa.
