Women's Hockey To Show Support This Weekend

1/28/2014 3:54:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 6 Cornell women's hockey team will be teaming up with the Do It For Daron organization for its game against Yale on Friday, Jan. 31 to help promote mental health awareness. The following day the Big Red, along with the You Can Play Project and Cornell Athlete Ally, will also help to promote LGBT inclusion. The game against the Bulldogs will faceoff on Friday at 7 p.m. and the game against Brown will start at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Fans are being asked to show their support by wearing purple to Friday night's game and wearing their brightest colors to Saturday's game.

Do It For Daron was created to help support the friends and family of 14 year old Daron Richardson, a young hockey player who committed suicide in 2011. Daron is the younger sister of current Big Red women's hockey team member Morgan Richardson and daughter of Binghamton Senators head coach Luke Richardson. The organization turned into a movement to inspire conversations about, and help transform, the mental health of youth. It encourages people to openly talk about mental illness and to ask for help when needed.

Bell Canada will donate $0.05 to mental health initiatives for every time someone uses the #BellLetsTalk hashtag today on Twitter.
