Gesualdi Named Ivy Football Rookie of the Year, Headlines Cornell's Haul

ITHACA, N.Y. – For the third time in five seasons, the Ivy League's Rookie of the Year Award will be displayed in Ithaca.

Freshman safety Nick Gesualdi was named the conference's top rookie as three Big Red players were honored when the league announced its postseason awards on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore punter Chris Fraser, last season's conference Rookie of the Year, was one of seven unanimous first-team All-Ivy League picks and one of two non-seniors on each of the coaches' ballots. Junior running back Luke Hagy captured second team honors and junior offensive lineman Zach Wilk joined Gesualdi as an honorable mention all-league pick.

Gesualdi set a school record by being named Ivy League Rookie of the Week four times and also captured Defensive Player of the Week once in becoming the fifth Cornellian to earn the accolade. Gesualdi set a Cornell freshman record for interceptions in a season (four), a mark that ranked tied for first in the Ivy League and 25th nationally. He was second on the team and first among conference freshmen (17th overall) in the Ivy in tackles (58). He also led all Ivy rookies in interceptions, and passes defended (eight) and ranked third in tackles for loss (5.0) and sacks (2.0). Gesualdi had a dominant effort in the Big Red's win over Columbia with two interceptions, a forced fumble, a key fourth quarter sack, a drive-ending pass breakup and a team-high seven tackles to earn National Freshman of the Week, as well as Ivy League Defensive and Rookie of the Week. He made six tackles with his first career interception and sack to go along with a second pass breakup against defending Ivy League champion Princeton and posted an interception and a game-high seven tackles vs. Penn. Gesualdi had eight tackles and two tackles for loss against Lehigh and eight more stops at defending Ivy champ Harvard.

Fraser became the first Cornellian to earn first-team All-Ivy accolades in consecutive seasons since Kevin Boothe '05 did so three straight years from 2003-05 and the first to accomplish it as both a freshman and sophomore. He finished 19th nationally and first in the Ivy League in punting average (41.7) by nearly three full yards per kick (2.8). Fraser had Ivy league's longest punt (72 yards) among his 10 kicks of 50+ yards and led the Ancient Eight with 21 kicks placed inside the 20, two more than any other punter in the league. He earned Special Teams Player of the Week accolades once during the year and averaged at least 40 yards per punt in nine of the team's 10 games and at least 42.0 yards in six of them.

Hagy ranked third in Ivy League in rushing (734 yards, 81.6 per game) and added six total touchdowns (four rushing, two receiving), plus passed for one. He had three 100-yard rushing games, all coming in the final three contests of 2014. During the season, Hagy became first player in Cornell history to reach 1,000 career yards both rushing and receiving and the 29th player in school history to surpass the century mark in career rushing yards. He will enter his senior season with at least one reception in all 29 of his games, and if he makes a catch in all 10 games as a senior, will match the school record. Hagy ran for a career-high 148 yards on 19 carries and scored three total touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) in the win at Columbia. Included was a game-winning 63-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter against the Lions. He also had carries for 48 and 49 yards on the year, the three longest carries by a Cornell player since 2010. Hagy posted 110 rushing yards on 18 carries vs. Dartmouth, while also catching four passes for 28 yards and completing a pass for 19 yards, and ran for 111 yards on 23 carries against Penn while catching four passes for 50 additional yards. Hagy ran 16 times for 91 yards and a touchdown, caught three passes for 45 yards and even threw a touchdown pass in a loss to defending Ivy champion Princeton.

Wilk plugged in at right tackle for an inexperienced offensive line and helped Cornell post its three highest yardage totals in the final four games of the season. The two-time honorable mention All-Ivy selection helped the offense show vast improvement over the final four weeks, averaging 22.5 points and 374.3 yards per game after just 11.5 points and 230.5 yards in the first six weeks.
