Box Score TROY, N.Y. – The No. 3 Cornell women's hockey team is making a habit of winning in overtime. Freshman forward
Hanna Bunton gave the Big Red its second overtime victory in a span of two weeks, propelling Cornell to a 6-5 victory Saturday at Rensselaer.
Junior forward
Jillian Saulnier had two goals and one assist on the day, launching her into to 10th on the program's all-time points list. She provided the overtime winner for the Big Red on Feb. 7 at Colgate, helping the team to stay unbeaten in overtime games this season (2-0-4). Bunton had two goals Saturday, while
Cassandra Poudrier and
Emily Fulton each had one goal and one assist.
The weekend of short-handed goals continued with Poudrier's unassisted goal 12 minutes into the game. The Engineers' Toni Sanders answered back 30 seconds later to lock the game up at 1, but three minutes later, Saulnier scored off passes from
Jessica Campbell and Bunton to help Cornell regain the lead. Lauren Wash then netted the equalizer for RPI at 17:21 to keep the game tied going into the first intermission.
The Big Red scored the next two goals to take a 4-2 lead seven minutes into the second period, but Rensselaer answered back with two of its own. With 12 seconds left before the second intermission, Bunton lit the lamp for the Big Red to give Cornell its fourth lead of the game heading into the final period.
Ali Sveboda kept the Engineers alive with 25 seconds left to play in regulation when she netted a goal to once again deadlock the game.
Bunton then provided the game winner 1:19 into the extra frame to give the Big Red its sixth-straight win.
Lauren Slebodnick earned her 66th career win and her 12th of the season behind 22 saves.
The Big Red returns to Lynah Rink next weekend when it plays host to Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. Friday night and Princeton at 4 p.m. Saturday.
