SOCHI, Russia – Former Cornell women's track and field standout Jamie Greubel '06 won the bronze medal today in the women's bobsled at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia with a time of 3:51.61, just 1.1 seconds out of the silver. She becomes just the second Big Red graduate to earn a medal in bobsled, joining Dick Parke '16 who won gold in the men's four-man bobsled at the 1928 games in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

The medal from Greubel guarantees that five Cornellians will take home a medal from Sochi, as Rebecca Johnston '12, Laura Fortino '13, Lauriane Rougeau '13 and Brianne Jenner '15 will play for Team Canada as it takes on Team USA in the women's ice hockey gold medal game. That will make the 2014 Big Red Olympic contingent the most decorated in the history of the winter games and will match the best performance ever, which happened during the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, Calif., when rowers David Clark and Chip Lubsen both won silver, while swimmer Pedro Pablo Morales, Jr. won two silver and one gold.

No stranger to winning, Greubel was a member of four Indoor and four Outdoor Heptagonal Championship teams. Individually, she won four Heps championships and holds the school record in the heptathlon (outdoor) and pentathlon (indoor). One of only two three-time outdoor Heps Champions in Ivy League history, she also set the meet record in the heptathlon in 2006.

With a pair of strong performances in the first two runs held yesterday, there was little doubt that Greubel and push athlete Aja Evans would take a medal, but with identical runs of 58.0 in the third and fourth round today, the pair was unable to leap over USA-1 (silver – 3:50.71) or Canada-1 (gold – 3:50.61).
