ITHACA, N.Y. — Big Red hockey fans will have an opportunity to buy autographed National Hockey League jerseys of former Cornell men's hockey players, with the proceeds of the sale going to a mission and service trip to the Dominican Republic led by
Mike Schafer, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Hockey, with current players and members of the Ithaca community.
Personalized, autographed jerseys from some of the Big Red program's most famous alumni will be available for $300. As a bonus, the jersey can be from any NHL team the respective player competed for. Options include Hall of Famers Ken Dryden (Montreal Canadiens) and Joe Nieuwendyk (Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, New Jersey Devils, Dallas Stars or Calgary Flames), plus the six former Big Red players who have suited up in the NHL this season – Doug Murray (Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins or San Jose Sharks), Matt Moulson (Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders or Los Angeles Kings), Ben Scrivens (Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings or Toronto Maple Leafs), Colin Greening (Ottawa Senators), Riley Nash (Carolina Hurricanes) and Sean Collins (Columbus Blue Jackets).
Proceeds from the jersey sale will go toward the Big Red's third service trip through The Portal de Belen Foundation. The Cornell hockey program has already made trips in 2009 and 2012, which included the construction of a multi-purpose building used for adult and child instruction, community gatherings, church services, and hurricane refuge. To submit a request, e-mail
Mike Schafer at mcs14@cornell.edu. There will be a limit of 10 jerseys per player, honored in the order of payment received. Checks for the jerseys should be made out to "The Portal de Belen Foundation" and would be tax deductible. All sales will end Feb. 15.
