PHILADELPHIA — Men's hockey senior goaltender
Andy Iles was named one of five First-Team All-Americans for the Senior CLASS Award, which was presented Thursday at the Frozen Four.
Iles is one of five first-teamers, along with winner Brock Higgs of Rensselaer. The second team is comprised of the other five finalists for the award, which is presented annually to a NCAA Division I senior with notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
Iles recently concluded a storied career with his hometown Big Red, racking up a 58-42-17 record, 2.26 goals-against average and .917 save percentage with nine shutouts. After splitting starts his freshman season and earning a spot on the All-ECAC Hockey Rookie Team, Iles was the Big Red's iron man over the following three seasons. He has started 101 of the Big Red's last 102 games, and had the third-longest consecutive start streak in NCAA Division I history (80). His 2,988 career saves are the most in program history, having passed Ben Scrivens '10 on the list in a Feb. 28 game against Dartmouth.
A natural leader with extraordinary focus and attention to detail, Iles has the distinction of serving as an assistant captain this season – a rarity for goaltenders. The last Cornell goalie to wear a letter was Darren Eliot during the 1982-83 season. He is a member of the Sphinx Head Senior Honor Society, which recognizes members of the junior and senior class who have distinguished themselves in leadership and service to the university. Iles is also a member of the Red Key Society, an honor society specifically for varsity athletes which honors outstanding undergraduate contributors to the athletic program and the university as a whole through community service events.
Some of the community projects Iles has been involved in includes a service trip to Don Juan, Dominican Republic, where the group was involved in the construction of a multipurpose center that will serve as a church and school in an impoverished area. In December, Iles served for a second time as the organizer and planner of the Cornell Hockey Teddy Bear Toss, which donates proceeds to Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes and the Franziska Racker Centers, which is a regional disability service. Iles has also worked with Feed My Starving Children, packaging meals that are sent to orphanages, schools and refugee camps, and he has volunteered in the Newfield Elementary School mentorship program and for local youth hockey teams.
Iles was named the ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year and Ivy League Player of the Year. He is also a two-time All-ECAC Hockey Second Team selection and won the league's Goaltender of the Week award nine times over his career. He is the second Cornellian to be named to the Senior CLASS Award All-America First Team in the last three years, with defenseman Keir Ross '12 also taking home the honor after his senior season. Iles is currently playing professionally with the ECHL's Florida Everblades.
