NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Junior
Colin Sinclair and freshman
David Volfson concluded deep runs in the singles and doubles competitions at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional on Monday afternoon at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
In doubles, the Big Red duo took Columbia's Shawn Hadavi and Richard Pham to a tiebreaker in the semifinals before suffering a 10-6 loss there. With this result, Cornell has sent four teams into the semifinals of regionals over the last three years.
In singles, second-seeded Volfson won his quarterfinal match against Hadavi in three sets to advance to the semifinals. But that's where his march ended, with Pham surging to a 6-2, 6-1 win. Earlier in the day, Pham defeated Sinclair in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 7-5.
Cornell resumes its fall tournament schedule with three straight weeks of attempting to qualify at Pro Challenger events. The Big Red will be in Charlottesville, Va. next weekend, followed by trips to Knoxville, Tenn. and Champaign, Ill.
