POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Big Red fencing team opened its dual meet season in style, picking up eight victories today, with junior Victoria Wines going a perfect 21-0, at the Vassar Invitational. Cornell defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, Haverford, CCNY, Sacred Heart, Vassar, Tufts, Northwestern, and Stevens Institute of Technology.
 
The foil squad dominated the day, winning 59-of-72 bouts and going a perfect 9-0 vs. Haverford, Sacred Heart and Tufts. Ediona Sera was nearly perfect at 20-1 on the day, while Angelica Gangemi (19-3) was equally impressive. All five foil fencers finished with winning records with Gabriella Zusin (12-6), Angela Zhang (4-1) and Julia Telischi (4-2) rounding out the Big Red's performance.
 
The sabre squad was nearly as dominant as the foil squad, winning 58-of-72 bouts. Four members of the squad reached double-digit wins, with Regina Chen posting a team best 15-4 record, followed closely by Megan Buteau (14-2), Zoee D'Costa (14-3), Yelizaveta Sapozhnikov (13-4). In limited action, Abigail Forth also posted a winning record at 2-1.
 
The epee squad posted a record of 50-22 on the day, thanks in large part to Victoria Wines unblemished 21-0 record. Also reaching double-digit wins was Emma Wilkinson (10-3) and Ashley Muller (10-7), while Jasmine Chow finished with a winning record (7-6). Jenny Zheng (2-6) rounded out the Big Red.
