STORRS, Conn. -- The Cornell women's polo team broke a deadlock in the final 10 seconds to claim the program's 14th national title with a 17-16 triumph over Virginia in the finals of the 2015 USPA Collegiate National Tournament at the University of Connecticut. The Big Red ends its season with an 18-4 record.
The Big Red jumped out to a 7-2 lead after one. The Cavaliers are a tough team though and fought back to take the second chukker 7-4, but still trailed 11-9 at the half. Cornell edged out to a 14-11 lead after three. The Cavaliers would not go away, taking back the lead at 16-15 with almost three minutes left. Cornell remained resilient and tied the game up at 16-16. With 10 seconds left, Cornell scored the winning goal to take home the national title, theprogram's first since 2011.
Anna Winslow, who took home All-Star honors, scored five goals,
Devin Cox had four,
Emma Eldredge scored three with two pony and three penalty goals. Both men's and women's strings were voted best playing, along with the single best playing pony for both the men and women as well.
Cornell advanced to the finals with a 19-17 triumph over the host Huskies. The win was the fifth in six meetings this season with their regional rivals, coming back from a 9-7 halftime deficit. Winslow led all scorers with 11 goals, Eldredge tallied four, with Cox adding 3 and one for the ponies.
