Buczek Headlines Four Big Red All-Americans With First-Team Nod

BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior midfielder Connor Buczek became the 28th player in Cornell men's lacrosse history to be named All-American three times, while classmates Jordan Stevens (second team), Matt Donovan (honorable mention) and Chris Cook (honorable mention) were also named All-American when the teams were announced this morning by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. The four All-American selections are the most by any team in the Ivy League and Cornell has placed at least four players on the various All-American teams in nine of the past 10 seasons.

Stevens and Donovan are repeat selections, as both were honorable mentions honorees a year ago.

With his honorable mention selection, Cook joins his father, Kevin Cook '84, to become the first father-son duo to earn All-American honors for the Cornell lacrosse program.

The All-American selection is the third of Buczek's career, including consecutive first team honors over the past two seasons. He graduates as the top scoring midfielder in Big Red history with 155 points and ranks in the top 20 in Cornell history among all players for goals (ninth – 106), points (13th – 155), and assists (18th – 49). The 2014 Ivy League Player of the Year, he was a three-time unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection, becoming just the ninth player in Cornell history, and the 33d player in the history of the Ivy League, to be named to the top team three times in their career. A two-time Tewaaraton Trophy nominee, he finished the year ranked first on the team in goals (40), second overall in points (54) and third overall in assists (14). This season Buczek also became the first midfielder in Cornell history to score 40 goals in a season, and he is just the seventh midfielder in the history of the Ivy League to record both 40 goals in a single season and 100 goals in a career. A well-respected member of the Big Red community, Buczek was also named the recipient of Cornell's Ronald P. Lynch Senior Spirit Award, given to senior student-athlete whose leadership on and off the field models the ideals of the Big Red athletics department. A tremendous student in the classroom, Buczek was recently named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and a USILA Scholar-Athlete.

Stevens was a two-time unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection and a USILA Scholar Athlete. He proved to be one of the top cover men in the nation over the past two seasons, routinely being tasked with shutting down the opponent's top attackman. Stevens finished his senior year with 42 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers and finished his career ranked third in Cornell history with 63 caused turnovers.

Donovan was a three-time All-Ivy selection, with consecutive first-team selections over the past two seasons. As a senior, he led the Big Red in points (64) and assists (25) while finishing second overall in goals (39). He is just the 10th player in Cornell history to post at least 50 points in consecutive seasons, with 58 points as a junior and 64 points as a senior. He graduates ranking in the top 10 in Cornell history in points (fourth – 189), goals (eighth – 119) and assists (eighth – 70). A 2015 Tewaaraton Trophy nominee, Donovan was the Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2012.

Cook earned the first post-season accolade of his career after a tremendous senior campaign. A two-year member of the Big Red's second offensive midfield, Cook made the transition to the defensive midfield prior to the season and quickly established himself as one of the best in the game. He was also an invaluable member of Cornell's face-off unit, playing on the wing and helping the squad to a .657 winning percent overall, good for fourth in the nation. Cook finished the year ranked 26th in the nation, and first among all non-face-off midfielders, with 4.94 ground balls per game. A player with tremendous speed and an aggressive style of play, he also helped to spark transition and finished the year with four goals and five assist for a career-high nine points.

Cornell closed the 2015 season with a 10-6 record (4-2 Ivy) and earned a share of its 12th Ivy League title in the last 13 years. The Big Red earned an at-large bid as the No. 8 seed to the NCAA championships, where it fell in the first round to Albany.
