Women's Polo Wins 15th National Championship

Ithaca, N.Y. – Women's polo battled the Texas A&M Aggies for the USPA Intercollegiate National Championship on Saturday afternoon.  The match marked the 32nd time the Big Red appeared in the Championship out of 41 possible chances.

Captain Anna Winslow led Elena Wicker and Emma Eldredge into the match.  The Big Red took the early lead 3-1 and closed the first chukker ahead 4-2.

The Aggies were rattled but responded in the second.  After trading goals with the Red, A&M ran off four unanswered goals to take a 7-5 lead into the half.

The third saw the teams battle back and forth with each scoring three times.  A&M ended the chukker with the two-goal lead at 10-8.

Cornell answered the bell in the fourth by scoring the first five goals to take a 13-10 lead with about 1:30 left on the clock.  The Aggies scored with 40 seconds left to score what would be the final goal of the match.  Cornell then gained control of he ball and ran the final 25 seconds of the clock to win their 15th National Championship 13-11.

Both Anna Winslow and Elena Wicker tallied six goals apiece and each garnered an All Star Award.  Emma Eldredge scored once but was described in the webcast as being the workhorse for the Red.  Cornell's Juanita took home Best Pony and Cornell also won Best String on the Women's side.

On the men's side, Ignacio Masias also took home an all-star award.
