PRINCETON, N.J. – The Big Red men's lacrosse team had five players named All-Ivy when the teams were announced this afternoon. Seniors
Brennan Donville and
John Edmonds, as well as junior
Domenic Massimilian and sophomore
Jake Pulver were named second-team, while senior
Ryan Matthews earned an honorable mention selection. All five players are first-time honorees and Cornell has now placed at least five players on the various All-Ivy teams in each of the past 18 seasons.
In his first season as a full-time starter, Donville had the best year of his career leading the Big Red. He currently ranks fourth in the Ivy League in save percentage (.511), saves per game (10.38), and goals-against average (10.22). He was named the Ivy League Player of the Week and the NCAA Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Big Red upset No. 17 Virginia with a career-high 16 saves on March 12. He posted double-digit saves six times on the year and allowed fewer than 10 goals on seven occasions. Donville finished his career with a 10-7 record.
Edmonds was Cornell's most dangerous offensive threat with a team-high 26 points on 14 goals and 12 assists. He registered at least one point in 10-of-13 games and posted multiple points in seven contests. A player with great poise and vision, two of his most important points on the season came in the Colgate and Lehigh contests when he assisted on both buzzer-beating game-winners. With his assist vs. Brown on April 23, he became the 41st player in Big Red men's lacrosse history to reach the 100-point plateau in a career.
One of the most dominant face-off men in the nation, Massimilian currently ranks second in the Ivy League and sixth in the nation in winning percentage (.640), and leads the conference and ranks second in the country with 9.42 ground balls per game. He finished the year ranked fifth in Cornell history in both face-off winning percentage (.640) and ground balls in a single season (113), while ranking eighth overall in face-off wins in a single season (158). Massimilian won at least .500 percent of face offs taken in 10 contests and picked up double-digit ground balls in six games.
An outstanding lockdown defenseman, Pulver helped the Big Red to hold its Ivy League opponents to nearly 10 fewer shots per game than their season average (36.3 spg), while helping Cornell to the third best goals-against average in the conference (10.2). He finished the year with career highs in ground balls (16) and caused turnovers (6).
In his first season as a starter, Matthews finished the year ranked second on the team in goals (18) and fourth overall in points (21). He registered at least one point in 10-of-13 games and notched the overtime game-winning goal vs. No. 11 Syracuse. Matthews had seven multi-point contests and registered a career-high four goals vs. Lehigh.
